What is love? There are many opinions and definitions of love. One meaning of love is, â€Å"an intense feeling of deep affection† and another is â€Å"a feeling of warm personal attachment or deep affection.†(Dictionary.com) Love is an emotion and feeling that can only truly be experienced. It is not something that you can just pull from a hat, you must want it and even work for it. Kurt Vonnegut said, â€Å"A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved† (The Sirens of Titans). This shows that one purpose of life is love. Is love ever present in Madame Bovary? Does Emma Bovary ever experience true love throughout the novel? Emma has her husband Charles, daughter Berthe, and two lovers, Leon and Rodolphe, but does she ever feel actual love for any of them? Ever since she lived in a convent as a young girl, Emma has dreamed of love and marriage. She had every chance to but instead blew it. Charles Bovar y met Emma because she was the daughter of a patient of his. Charles soons falls in love with her. They marry and move to Tostes. Yet Emma is not happy because marriage does not live up to Emma’s romantic expectations. She always dreamed of love and marriage but when she finally gets it, she does not want it anymore.
